WHY TAKE THIS COURSE

The Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act of 2015 contains a large number of new principles, some of which are quite complex and have significant implications for services and social care students, educators, supervisors, staff, managers, and Boards of Management. It has important implications for those working in banking, financial services, legal professions, and medical personnel.

This course is focused on the social care and social service aspects of the United Nations Disability Convention of 2006 on law and practice in Ireland.

The Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act of 2015 provides for a huge change in the rights of people with a disability and the obligations of others towards them. The law will change relationships between people. This course provides basic information and analysis on why this law was passed. It signals some of the changes it will introduce to the everyday work and lives of people with disabilities and social care staff. The course discusses how the 2015 Act is situated within a human rights framework and is a new direction in thinking about disability which will have widespread social and economic consequences. The Act has special implications for people with a mental illness, a brain injury, an intellectual disability, or dementia, be their conditions temporary or permanent.

This course is an introduction to the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act of 2015. It provides information and analysis on the substance and context of the act and how it will effect the lives of people with disabilities, organisations and their staff.

The course is aimed at any staff in disability services.

Option A - free ADM for Frontline Staff (no Assessment or Cert provided) Expand

Option A is a free option where the materials are available to anyone through our online Learning Centre. There is no login required and students can just access this link, then scroll down that page and enter the course, and read through the material.

There is no assessment or certificate of completion for this option.

Option B: €25 per participant - Certificate in ADM for Frontline Staff awarded Expand

Option B: a paid option where the student (or their manager) requires the participant to receive a ‘Certificate of Completion’ for doing the course. The course materials are exactly the same as the free version but the student also undertakes a very short assessment at the end of the course before receiving their Cert of Completion PDF document which they can download themselves.

In this case we need to set up a student account for the student so that they can log in and engage with the course, and their completion can be tracked and certified.

This second option also allows the OTC to set up an attendance report for a group of participants which the manager can access.

There is no limit to the number of participants on option B.

The manager must first gain consent from each student in order for the OTC to share their progress report.

There is an administrative charge of only €25 per student which the manager can be invoiced for before the commencement of the course.

Please contact Linda (linda.hu@opentrainingcollege.com) if you have any interest in option B for you or your staff and the enrolments can be set up within a day or two. Please email her an excel file with the list of participant details under 4 columns, showing:

  • first name of the participant
  • last name of the participant
  • email address of the participant
  • ‘Consent agreed to share progress report’ written in column four for each participant.
Option C: €55 per participant - Certificate in ADM for Managers and System Changers awarded Expand

Option C: a paid option where the student completes the Assisted Decision Making for Managers and System Changers version of the course. Successful participants will be awarded an OTC ‘Certificate of Completion’.
