WHY TAKE THIS COURSE

This programme is designed to address the needs of front-line staff (Care Worker, Healthcare Assistant, Family Support Worker, Home Support Worker, Personal Assistant and Community Care Worker) working in services for people with Intellectual Disability in Ireland.

This course is aimed at people working in disability services. It was created by people with extensive first-line experience who fully understand the area and the problems that come with attempting to balance work, life and learning when you work in the sector.

Having a relevant QQI Level 5 qualification is a  basic requirement to access work as a Care Assistant, SNA, Key Worker, Personal Assistant or Community Support Worker in a large number of organisations.

If you are already working in a service that is HIQA regulated, a Level 5 qualification is increasingly becoming a requirement.

COURSE CONTENT

The certificate is made up of ‘core’ and ‘elective’ modules:

 Core Modules

The six core modules are mandatory and have to be completed by everyone:
Intellectual Disability Studies (5N1652) - 15 Credits Expand
  • This core module sets the scene for the course by placing current service provision clearly within a historical context.
  • This module aims to introduce the learner to the history and development of services for people with intellectual disabilities in Ireland and to enable them to evaluate the service provision in which they are involved.
  • It explores some of the reasons why people with disabilities have been marginalised in society and looks at crucial areas such as inclusion, social role valorisation, models/perspectives/attitudes of disability and quality of life.
  • This module will also enable the learner to promote and practice a social model human rights approach to service provision.
Facilitating Learning (5N1753 - 15 Credits) Expand

The ability to teach people new and useful skills is a crucial part of the role of the frontline worker. This module will provide the learner with practical teaching tools and techniques to support people in learning effectively.

The assessment requires that a meaningful task or skill be taught to a person they support. This module will also introduce key theories and values underpinning teaching and learning to facilitate people to learn using a tailored approach that is individualised in line with best practice.

Empowering the Individual (5N1749 - 15 Credits) Expand
  • This module places the person with an intellectual disability at the centre of the decision-making process in their life.
  • This module aims to explore the concept of empowerment for people with an intellectual disability.
  • It looks at how service delivery and the structure of past, current and future services have and can impact how empowered or disempowered people with intellectual disabilities are.
  • This module will equip learners with the knowledge, skills and competencies to facilitate the people they support to develop and achieve their personal goals through the person-centred planning process and with the help of circles of support in making decisions about their personal goals and support needs.
Community Inclusion (5N1740 - 15 Credits) Expand

Knowing how to support a person with a disability in developing meaningful links to the community and promoting community inclusion is crucial in frontline work. This module explores the concept of community inclusion.

In doing this, learners will explore and practice using community networking tools and techniques how socially valued roles can be supported and nurtured by creating links and connections within the community for a person they support based on the supported person’s skills, interests and capacities.

Personal Effectiveness (5N1390 - 15 Credits) Expand

This core module will allow learners to reflect on their strengths and areas for development. It will develop critical daily skills that frontline workers need, such as:

  • problem-solving techniques,
  • open-mindedness,
  • creativity,
  • resilience,
  • meeting effectiveness,
  • working in groups and
  • preparing and delivering presentations.

This module is completed over the duration of the programme to practice and demonstrate their personal effectiveness skills.

Work Practice (5N1433 - 15 Credits) Expand

This core module gives learners the time and opportunity to reflect on their work practice and how it is influenced by broader factors such as legislation and the economic context. It will focus on how the learner can contribute positively as a member of the organisation – for example, by maintaining timekeeping, meeting deadlines and adhering to policy and procedures. This module will allow the learner to work independently and as part of a team. It will allow the learner to reflect on personal work practices and identify their strengths and areas for development. Like Personal Effectiveness, it is delivered throughout the programme’s duration.

 Elective Modules

The electives are designed to allow people ‘customise’ the course to meet their specific personal, professional or career needs. This involves choosing two of the elective modules that most closely match your precise needs.

It is important to note that once you have been accepted for the course College staff will be available to help you make your choices.

Person-Centred Focus to Disability (5N1728 - 15 Credits) Expand

This module will be delivered along with Empowering the Individual.

Empowering the Individual explores the practical implementation of a person-centred planning process, the concept of empowerment and the role of staff in supporting someone to make decisions important to them.

Person Centred Focus to Disability provides the context with a focus on key practitioner skills. Both modules complement each other.

Challenging Behaviour (5N1706 - 15 Credits) Expand

This module examines how considering behaviour as a form of communication is crucial in determining how best to support a person whose quality of life has been impacted and equip the learner with knowledge and skills to support them using strength-based person-centred positive behaviour support interventions.

Learners will demonstrate the value-based principles of Positive Behaviour Support and gather and record information that can be used to analyse challenging behaviour and develop a support plan.

Using Lámh in a Total Communication Approach (5N713 and 5N1731 - 30 Credits combined) Expand

This course leads to two QQI Level 5 module components from the QQI Intellectual Disability Practice Award. The component modules are Facilitating Communication through Lámh (5N1713) and Total Communication (5N1731).

The programme is for those who use Lámh extensively in their work, are involved in supporting Lámh users, their families; are seeking comprehensive training in facilitating Lámh use using a total communication approach, and who may wish to progress to Lámh Tutor Training.

Meet the Course Director - Claire Hopkins

How do students benefit from doing this course? Expand

The course is designed to guide staff in meeting the challenges and opportunities they face in the Intellectual Disability sector. Staff need to be informed of changing policy, legislation, regulation and best practice. This course informs and instructs students on how to enhance their practice in this changing workplace.

What is the biggest fear that students have? Expand

I find that participants can lack confidence in their abilities as a practitioner and as a learner. This course will recognise and support the student's strengths.

It will enhance abilities while addressing the areas of practice that need to be better. I am always delighted when I hear students say 'I never saw it in that way  before', or 'that's a good idea! I can try that out and see if that works!'.

How does the College support the student? Expand

It can be nerve racking to face the the commitment of completing a full award. We understand this and have developed tried and tested supports that will address any concerns or anxieties. We always look forward to working with new students because our model of training delivery revolves around a supportive and respectful environment.

Common reactions to the workshops and the course materials have been 'thought provoking'; 'enjoyable'; and 'made me look at my work in a completely different way'.

Meet Margaret McDonald, Care Assistant, Daughters of Charity (now Avista)

What made you sign up for the course? Expand

I have been working in disability services for 36 years and have seen some of our residents grow up from childhood to adulthood. It has been such a rewarding time for me. Even with such experience, I agree that we are living in changing times and I agree with the HIQA regulations and I believe strongly that a proper qualification is very important no matter what your age or experience. You are never too old to learn!

Has the OTC supported you through the course? Expand

I have had great support from my tutor. She puts everything in very simple and easily understood terms. She has me so prepared that even if she wrote my assignment for me, it would be no better than mine.

What was your main concern before starting the course? Expand

I had not studied since doing my Leaving Cert many, many years ago. I was fearful of the workload and time management issues but I have learned to prioritise and balance the required study with my work and family life. I am very committed to making the most of my opportunity to do the course.

What has been the main benefit from doing the course? Expand

It's given me the skills to take a step back and look at things differently and to analyse my work practices more constructively. I think I am now more enthusiastic about the work we do and about accommodating new ideas from team members. At the end of the day, it's all about providing a better service for our service users.
